Clothing, in general, can be difficult. What to wear, what looks good, how to accessorize, what goes with what- these are questions we ask ourselves on a regular basis.  Clothing during a trip is an ordeal with a higher level of difficulty. It’s especially hard because, for many days, you only have a small selection of clothing that you have to wear for your entire trip. Living out of your suitcase can be difficult, so here are a few packing tips and tricks for when you finally cash in on those vacation days.

When deciding what to pack, the first thing to consider is where you are going. The climate of your destination is an extremely important factor to consider. Taking a parka on a tropical island makes no sense. It’s also important to know what you’re going to do on the trip, are you going swimming, hiking or camping? Different activities also require different types of clothing. Once you’ve figured out where you’re going and what you are going to be doing, it’s pretty easy to decide what you’re going to need to pack.

The first rule of traveling is to pack light, and this is especially true for clothing as clothing takes up most of our luggage. Whenever you pack make sure to pack the clothes that weigh the least. If you have two articles of clothing, that serve the same purpose, and you aren’t sure which one to take, take the one that weighs less.

Always wear clothes that are comfortable. You can’t really enjoy the scenery or festivities if your clothes don’t let you breathe. When it comes to comfort, jeans and a t-shirt are the best bet.  Tight fitting clothes are a big no-no when traveling. Makes sure the t-shirts you take are loose and well made. The jeans you pick should have good stretch and should be easy to move around in. Cotton clothes are also ideal. It’s important to take clothes that are washable and dry easily.

As for women, when traveling nothing beats a pair of leggings. They are comfy, easy to move around in and can be styled in lots of different ways. Caps are also super handy when it comes to trips. They protect your head from the rain and your eyes from the sun, not to mention they look super cool.

Whenever you pick a pair of pants or bag, make sure that it has pockets. There is nothing better than a pocket on an article of clothing. Pockets during trips make life so much easier.

If you’re going to a cold country make sure to take clothes that keep you warm but aren’t too heavy. Heavy clothing is difficult to wear and to carry. A trick to keeping warm and not wearing heavy clothes is to layer clothes instead. If you wear a few layers of clothing, then the air trapped between them acts as insulation and stops heat from escaping your body.

If you’re going somewhere where rain is a possibility, carry a raincoat or at the very least water resistant clothing.

It’s also important to wear clothes that are functional. Where ever you are traveling chances are you’ll have to walk a lot. In most cases, lots of physical activities will be involved. Make sure to take clothes that you can move in. Wear clothes that are wrinkle resistant. If ironing can be a hassle when you are in your home, just imagine how annoying it will be when you’re on vacation.

If you’re going hiking, take a good pair of boots and if you’re going around a metropolitan city then any good pair of walking shoes that you’re comfortable in will do. Make sure whatever shoes you take are durable; you don’t want to be in the middle of a hike and have your shoe sole suddenly come apart, water resistant footwear can come in real handy during your travels.

When going to a beach avoid leather at all costs. Try wearing plastic and rubber shoes, something which can be used even after it gets wet. If there’s a possibility of a formal event or anything related to business, always pack a good pair of formal shoes. You never know when you’ll need it, and it’s better to be prepared than to be under-dressed. For women, it’s better to avoid heels on trips. No matter how good they look on you, considering how much you might have to walk it’s always better to be comfortable. Trust me your feet will thank you later.
